Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Ohio

I have a friend who had rented a single family home in Parma, but the landlord who lives next door never had them sign a lease, everything was verbal. After living there a few months, his brother came to stay a few days and the landlord went berserk!!! She stated he had moved into the property which was incorrect. My friend was late one day with the rent and she raised his rent by $100.00 per month, again verbal. They paid the increase and a few months later, they received a letter from her attorney stating she wanted them to vacate the property. In the meantime, she has went to their home and screamed and threatened his wife to the point that they had to contact the police on a few different occassions. Although, she never filed an eviction, she is suing them for a couple thousand dollars for ?????
Before moving into the property, he had to finish rehabing it, he purchased and laid all the carpeting, he did necesary repairs throughout the home to make it livable, can he countersue in court for his out of pocket expenses and labor. Again, all this was done without any written contracts.
Does he have any rights in court regarding this situation? When he and his family moved out, they found a home about 4 doors down the street, she actually followed the moving truck and hid behind a bush to watch them.

It sounds like a bad situation. Does the landlord want any rent that is past due?
He can likely countersue for the work that he did.
