My son picked up another students bookbag and his laptop fell out, damaging it. Am I responsible for all the costs of getting it repaired?

You are not "responsible" for anything until the owner sues your son for negligence and gets a judgment. (You don't state the age of your son.) This would most likely occur in small claims court. But I ask you, if the shoe were on the other foot, what would you want to happen?
