Defamation is an action where the plaintiff claims that the defendant made a false statement, that the statement was

defamatory, that the false defamatory statement was published (heard/read by more than the plaintiff and defendant), that the

plaintiff was injured, and that the defendant acted with the required degree

of fault (which varies depending on the status of the defendant, e.g., public figure.)
