Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Ohio

Incorrect property assessment

When reviewing my property tax assessment for a proposed increase, I found out a mistake had been made by the county regarding the square footage of my home. I built the home in 2001, but had never researched the the government website to check the accuracy of the info on my house (didn't even know I could do this). I have been taxed for past six years on an additional 600 sq ft of living area that does not exist. Do I have recourse for reimbursement from the city/county/state for overpayment in property taxes from 2001-2007?

Re: Incorrect property assessment

Call your county auditor and explain the mistake. They should send out a representative to meet with you and measure the space. If they confirm a mistake was made, you should receive a refund. I think they only go back 5 years. You should be able to do this on an informal basis, without filling out forms or filing a complaint. If your auditor will not do it informally, they should tell you what form to fill out to file.
