Rental contract time line

Current tenants lease expires 5/15/01.Tenants and myself signed a new lease 4/15/01 to renew. Lease stayed the same except the new lease is for one year not six months like the last lease.Tenants want out of lease stating a lawyer said a new lease signed thirty days prior to old lease expiring is invalid.They also state they are willing to stay on for six months which is until 11/15/01.

Please advise

There is no such rule to my knowledge and the tenant will be responsible under the new lease. The lawyer is just trying to bully you.
