Non profit fraud
i joined a motorcycle group who was planning a bike event. The president of the group gave us sponsorship letters to hand out to each business we canvassed. the letter claimed we were a non profit organization. I found out later we were not, nor had a 501c3 been filed. could I be in trouble for collecting monies under this guise?

Re: Non profit fraud
Yes, you are actually involved in "fraud." You are promising that contributions would be deductible and going to a charity. Instead, they are not deductible and for a private group.
The smart thing would be to have the president of the group contact a tax attorney to properly form the organization and apply for non-profit status.
I hope this helps!
