payroll taxes owed by ex-spouse

Me and my ex-spuse owned a business. He did not pay payroll taxes, I had no knoledge , but my name was on the business papers and I did sign checks.The IRS says I owe, last date assesed about Jan. 1996. Will this be on my record, or does this go away in 10 years? What is my best corse of action?

The IRS will eventually, if they have not done so already, file a tax lien against you. That will stay on your record for 10 years after the lien is released. It is only released if you pay the tax or work out a settlement arrangement with them.

You say that you did not know that the taxes wre unpaid. You may be elligible for innocent spouse relief. You might also consider an offer in compromise.
