Legal Question in Traffic Law in Ohio

Hello I am from Ohio and my drivers license is registered in Ohio; I received a speeding ticket in Florida and I intend on paying the ticket, but I was just wondering how I am directly affected by this ticket.

Ohio has what are known as "inter-state" compacts with most other states and territories of the US. Thus, if you are cited in their jurisdiction and fail to pay the ticket, that state will suspend your driver's license (in that state, even though you don't have one - same thing Ohio does to someone that drives in Ohio without a license will be charged with driving without a license, and usually will then have their license suspended, even though they don't have one - but if and when they go to get one, they will have to pay a reinstatement fee). That suspension of a license in state state will then be honored in Ohio if Ohio and that state have an inter-state compact and that provision exists (it does in most) in that particular inter-state compact.

So, the short answer to your question is that the ticket in another state can have an impact on your Ohio license, if you don't pay it, or if as a result of the ticket your driving privileges are suspended or revoked. In general, the "points" do NOT transfer onto your Ohio license though. However, it is becoming more common for insurance companies to go out and look for this and increase the policy premium. Thus, so long as you timely pay the ticket, and that state does not limit your driving privileges, there will likely be no impact on your Ohio license. The only impact may be an increase in your insurance premium, but it is my understanding that only a few insurance companies are spending the effort to look country wide.
