Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio

Third cousin is deceased, he had no family except third cousins. Should his assests be divided equally among the remaining third cousins, we are all equally related to him, there are 6 of us. We are hearing that because my father was a second cousin his offsprings (5 of us) get 50 percent of assests and his sisters offspring (1 person) gets the other 50 percent. We are wondering how are our parents are involved in this equation since they have been deceased for over 50 years, and the six remaining third cousings are all related to the deceased equally.
