Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio

Estate

I am adopted, my father and I are estranged; he passed away and his sister is not acknowledging my existence at all. I feel I have a right but cannot prove without looking at the will. What are my rights?

Re: Estate

If you are speaking about your adopted father, then you have every right and responsibility of a natural born child toward your father. Keep in mind that parents can disinherit their children, whether they are natural born or adopted.

Re: Estate

The answer to your question is complicated and depends on whether you were adopted by your father or the father you are referring to is your biological father and you were adopted by someone else.

It also will depend on whether your father died with any property that requires probate and whether or not there is a will or if he died without a will. If he died without a will and there is property subject to probate you may have a right to receive property depending on your relationship to your father.

You should consult an attorney who can determine your rights.
