Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio

Estate tax

I received a check as part of a cousin's estate. I then received notice that a stop-payment was put on the check because the will was set up that every heir had to pay their share of the estate tax. Can you explain this to me? Can the stated dollar amount be reduced by taxes, or should the taxes have come off the gross amount of the estate?

Re: Estate tax

Estate taxes can be paid from each inheritance or off the gross estate before dividing into shares. It all depends on the language in the will. It would have been advantageous to figure this out before they sent you the check and getting your hopes up. Ask to see a copy of the will to verify it for yourself.
