at the end of a trust i was given it says it can be amended however the duties powers and compensation of the trustee shall not be changed without its written consent does this mean that there must be a letter of approval or how is approval suppose to be shown if trustee duties were changed

Yes, written consent would come in the form of a letter by the person who controls the trust. If it is a revocable trust, then usually the grantor. If it is an irrevocable trust, then usually the trustee.
