Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio
My mother is 90 yrs old and living in Ohio. I live in Indiana and will be handling her estate when she passes. She has no home, she rents a low income senior appartment. All she owns is her house hold goods. She has no savings and lives on her socioal security benefit of $800 per month. She has a small life insurance policy, and she has pre-paid for her funeral. What should we do in planning for her passing that will be easier for me to do from Indiana when the time comes?

Here are several suggestions: Make sure she tells the manager that you have permission to enter her apt. and remove her possessions after her death. See if they will accept that. Have her add to her bank accounts the names of her children as pay-on-death beneficiaries. See that she has properly designated beneficiaries on her life insurance policy. She should have a Will, in case not everything has been or can be taken care of without having an estate representative appointed by the probate court. Since you do not live in Ohio, you cannot be her estate representative (executor) unless she names you in her Will.
