Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio

obituary notices

Hi,

My neighbor insists that a family, by law, at least in Ohio, is required to place an obituary notice in a local newspaper, to ensure that any creditors would be able to petition the court to reclaim any money owed by the deceased. Is that accurate?

Thank you!

Re: obituary notices

This is not correct. There is no requirement that an obituary be published.

If an estate is opened, the notice of admission of the will is published in the newspaper. As only probate assets are subject to creditor's claims in Ohio, this is deemed sufficient notice to creditors to present claims.
