Probate and stocks

The lawyer acting as executor in my aunts estate has not sold off her stocks yet...he told my sister and I that the price was ''frozen at the time of her death''. Huh? How does that work?

The value of the stock for tax purposes is determined at the time of death. If the stocks have fallen in value since her death and sold there will be a capital loss to the estate.
