Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Oklahoma

school legality

My 8yr old wear a mohawk, the schoo sent a letter telling him to get rid of it. Can they do this? He doesn't spike it up at school it is flattend down on his head. This looks like it would be a freedom of expression issue or civil rights.

Re: school legality

Some school do have appearance policies but whether or not they imposed on your civil rights or liberties will depend of the reason the policy was implemented. Did you review their policy? If yes, was it because it created a distraction for the other students? Or, was the reason stereotyical based on assumptions that it would lead to duplicated behaviors by the other students? Whatever the reason, you may want to review the school's policy yourself to establish why this rule is being imposed on your son. Then, if there is no justifiable reason, we may be able to direct you on this subject.
