Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Oklahoma
Credit Card Debt associated with Divorce
Following a divorce in 1996 I paid off over $50,000 in credit card debts. Letters were sent to each with copie of decree etc. Years later Dillards kept after me since I was a co-originator of the card. They finally wrote off the debt. Now, only this week a collector is calling me about a credit card debt of over $9000 She made the last payment in 2001 and I am supposedly a co-originator of this card dating back to 1993. She is in a nursing home, rather incapacitated and on Medicaid. Now they are going after me and offering a ''deal'' if I will ''do the right thing and take care of my responsibilities on this'' Otherwise they will start legal proceedings, place a lien on my house and ''get their money sooner or later'' Does my divorce decree not mean anything in matters like this? They say the laws are completely on their side and they collect in 95% of the cases....Help

Re: Credit Card Debt associated with Divorce
Yours may be the 5% they do not. The question is when were the charges made? If after the divorce then thell them to get lost. IF they do sue you then fight it! Hire a local Atty and go get-em!
If the debt was made prior to the divorce then they can come after you as long as the statute of limitations has not run. It may have. Talk to a local Atty!
