Legal Question in Criminal Law in Oklahoma

A 53 year old woman (a retired CPA and bank VP) with a spotless record was arrested for petty larceny. She was accused of taking items totaling approx $170 from a Target store. She purchased items as well but allegedly attempted to leave the store without paying for everything. This was very unusual and untypical behavior. The next morning, she woke up only remembering initially entering the store and then waking up in her own bed. Retracing her steps and through deductive reasoning she discovered that she had accidently ingested the sleeping pill Ambien when she took an over the counter headache medicine. She received a citation requiring her to appear in Municipal court (Oklahoma county- city of Edmond). Does she need a lawyer to appear with her and what is likely to happen?

YES, she needs a lawyer. If someone has a brain tumor, they need a doctor. I have never handled one of these Ambien cases but I have heard similar cases like this from other attorneys. If the city cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she knowingly stole the items, she will be found not guilty.
