Can an inmate get a longer sentence if he files for an appeal on a criminal conviction and lose?

An accused who files an appeal of a criminal conviction cannot be given a longer sentence if the appeal is unsuccessful. However, it is possible that an accused can file an appeal, be granted a new trial because of the successful appeal, and then receive a longer sentence from the second trial.
