Legal Question in Criminal Law in Oklahoma

My car was damaged by a disgruntled ex. He left his paint marks all over the side of the car. Marks are same color as the car he drives. He also has left text messages of a threatening nature. He has left tire tracts in my yard. Police said "this happens all the time to gilted ex'es". He wasn't overly concerned. He said that will probably be it. If not come back and file a formal complaint. The damage to my car will be over a thousand dollars at least. This is a small town. mostly "Barney" types. I am concerned about escalation, more damage, even personal confrontations. How serious does situations have to become before one files charges. He does not work, has no money.
