Legal Question in Family Law in Oklahoma

Divorce

My girlfriend is being petitioned for a divorce from her separated husband. She was aware it was coming but is surprised at how quickly the paperwork was thrown at her and has some questions she needs answered.there is a form about a waiver she is supposed to sign(I am reading it as saying she agrees with the terms of the divorce and waives her rights now and in the future for any argument in regards to the settlement) and needs to have it signed in what is about 2 weeks and returned.I am concerned that she dosen't understand the settlement papers nor what she may be throwing away due to the rush by her husband to get this pushed through. She was a stay at home mom for the most part, raised and home schooled the kids(3 girls),while he was the money maker. She isn't looking for the house and agrees he should maintain primary custody of the children but she is leaving with not much more than a sewing machine and 5000 dollars for a car.I just want her to slow down and make sure there is nothing she will regret a bit further down the line.If she dosent sign the waiver will the divorce still go through or can she request some time from the court to review her situation,or request council be paid by her husband?

Re: Divorce

THis is more than an online answer can do to help her. I would strongly suggest that she take the papers and consult an attorney. Some of what is happening to her does not make sense.

Re: Divorce

I would be very concerned about her understanding of the provisions of the agreement. The standard way to do this is to get a lawyer and have the lawyer review the agreement. It may be your girlfriend is entitled to alimony and a much larger share of the assets. It is no longer the case that assets are awarded based on who made more money. Non-financial contributions count, especially in a longer marriage. She needs legal help. I typically can look over such an agreement and counsel clients within an hour's time .
