If you file a Petition for Legal Separation, you ask the court to address most of the same issues that are involved in a divorce, i.e., custody, visitation, child support, debt division, property division but not a divorce. Normally, if one party files for a legal separation it ultimately turns into a divorce or the parties eventually reconcile.
