Legal Question in Family Law in Oklahoma
Nonmarried father wants visitation
We were never married, I am on the birth certificate. She went nuts shortly after pregnancy was discovered. I have been allowed to take our 18 month old once. I try to get along and she always starts an argument. I am a police officer and will not fight with the mom. The mom harasses me by calling and e-mailing. I have threatened VPO several times. I am only allowed to visit my daughter at the daycare. I want to start having regular visitations, especially on the holidays. My child has been allowed to visit her grandmother once. I have been told it will cost $5K to fight her in OK county court (where she lives) for simple visitation. Is any of this true?

Re: Nonmarried father wants visitation
Based on what you stated, you have rights you can pursue and probably have enforced. You need to file to establish paternity and for visitation. Typically this will cost in the thousands and take a fair amount of time. Attorneys generally have experience of doing the work and not being paid, which is why they ask for retainers. Look around and you might find someone less expensive, but the method of paying a retainer up front is fairly common.
