Responsibility of a spouse

If something happened to my spouse to prevent him from working am I responsible for his past debt. These debts are not in my name as a co-signer such as student loans. etc.

Thank you for your question. Definitely not if the debts were incurred before your marriage. Just as his assets before marriage might be considered his personal, rather than marital assets. If the debts were after marriage and could be considered necessary to his or your welfare, health then you might be responsible. I do not know whether a student loan would be considered a necessity as this would require some research to find out. The above is a general statement of law in layman's terms.
