The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides for up to 12 weeks per year employee leave for a number of things, including the need to care for certain family members. To qualify you must have worked 12 months for the employer, for at least 1,250 hours in the last 12 months, and there must be at least 50 employees at your worksite. If you qualify, you can request FMLA leave. Make your request in writing, and keep a copy.

The medical emergency must be a "serious health condition," defined as means an illness, injury, impairment, or physical or mental condition that involves (A) inpatient care in a hospital, hospice, or residential medical care facility; or (B) continuing treatment by a health care provider.

Lastly, the serious health condition must be for your spouse, son, daughter, or parent.
