voluntary termed co. and they continued to pay me through direct deposit. Although I know I should - do I ''legally'' have to pay the money back? about $2,000 more than they should have.

From a legal perspective you have been unjustly enriched and should return the money. Whether you wait for them to contact you or you contact them first is your decision.
