Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Oklahoma

Defamation Of Character / Slander ?

I am needing to know what would apply in this case. We are moving out of a rent house and we owe the owner a small sum of money. The new house that we are moving too, we know the owner personally, and she did not ask for any references nor did she ask for our landlords name etc...to call or get any history on us. Once our landlord found out that we are moving (with a 30 day notice) she started talking to people in the town (which it is a very small town) and telling them what bad people we are, told them several things, and she has also called the ''new'' landlord to tell her that we owe her money, and that we were never on time w/ rent (which is not true). She also told her that we have destroyed the house that it is a wreck and so on. The new landlord even came over to see the house to make sure that we didn't destroy it or anything because of the doubt she left. It's been like the talk of the town. Of course she is telling us she is going to take us to small claims court for the money that we owe her, which is fine and understandable, but I am wanting to know what I can do about the situation she has put us in by saying the things that she has said about us. Any help that you can give would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Defamation Of Character / Slander ?

You could have an attorney send the old landlord a letter instructing them to cease & desist from any misrepresentation or slander, but truth is a defense, and no slander occurs if the landlord states accurate factual elements concerning you.
