Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Oklahoma
cuffed and taken to mental hospital
my father passed and we buried him on march 5. I was needing to talk so I went to my place of employment which is the office of juvenile affairs cause I thought they would talk to me. I jokingly made the comment '' oh i was sittin home thinkin bout suicide but thought I would come here instead''. They would not let me leave and those that know me well know that I always say stupid stuff. The police came and cuffed me in front of the juveniles and took me to a mental hospital who kept me for about 3 minutes saying I was looking for comfort which is normal for the grief process. The humiliating part was that I was cuffed in front of my juveniles.

I understand your humiliation, but it is common to have a reaction to these comments, but not THAT reaction. Most of these individuals who responded are trained to take your comments seriously. This is why it is important to understand the impact of the words you use. What we don't understand it the handcuffs. There are many indicators but an open statement is not an indicator that you will cause immediate harm to yourself and others and the fact that you did openly express your feeling is a positive move, even jokingly. There is a question whether this reaction was appropriate for many reasons and we can certainly understand your concerns, particularly because you are looked upon as an example or role model for the juveniles. I hope this helps.
