What is the attorney on my case refferring to when he says ''IME''?

An insurance company sometimes asks for an IME, which is short for and independent medical evaluation. Although the name suggests that the evaluation should be independent, the performing doctor may receive tens of thousands of dollars a year from the insurance company for various cases. So how independent is it really?
