Legal Question in Personal Injury in Oklahoma

Potential Liability of Small Associations

I am a member of a small 501(c)6 organization. The majority of our activities include monthly meetings at a hotel. We provide (2) tickets per person for dinner drinks. The organization provides a bar in our meeting room for which the hotel furnishes the liquor and the bartending staff. Does the orgainzation have a potential liability in this situation that would substantiate the organization to carry general liability insurance? Would the organization have a potential liability for any accidents that occur while on the hotel property, either achohol or non-alchohol related?

Re: Potential Liability of Small Associations

It would be wise to obtain liability insurance just in case since the law as determined by the courts in the area of negligence are ever changing. I recall a case similar to what you describe in which liability was not found. But I do not remember the facts well enough to tell you that you are covered by a case on point. There are many things which would need be considered including whether you pay for the two tickets, whether the member pays for additional drinks, whether you pay for the room, bartenders or liquor. Better safe than sorry.
