A family trust was put in place-is it legal or ethical for the trustee to relay information to a beneficiary before the family member has died?

It is okay. But it would be better for you to consult with the Grantor. If you are the Grantor and Trustee, then you read the powers granted to the Trustee. If the Trust is silent or gives you all the authorities under the law, then you may talk to the beneficiary.
