If there are any assets that require distribution and these assets include real property, then you must seek probate. One adult child will be appointed as personal representaive by the court.
If the assets include only household furniture, then the children maycome to an angreement on the division of assets.
If the assets include insurance then contact the insurance company. It will notify the intended beneficiary what to do.
If the assets include bank accounts, CDS and other investment accounts, the bank or investment comany will decide what documents are acceptable.
One thing is cerain: each party entitled to receive notice must get a copy of the death certificates.
