I have a gym membership, which was being put on hold for 6 months. Is it legal for the gym to take money from my account after it was being put on hold without notifying me.

It depends on what your written contract with the gym says. No matter what it says, you can go to small claims court, explain the situation, and probably force the gym to at least give you back your money.
