Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Oregon

Good Morning,

to break it down..

I have a misdeamenor on my record, a small theft charge for walking out with some chapstick 3 years ago. I enrolled in a private school here in portland OR. In the VERY begining I told them about my charge..and told me it was fine, dont worry about it..people with worse cases have been accepted..etc and to just start classes.

...after 6 months go by I had a 4.0, doing really great in my classes...then suddenly..the school tells me im denied, and theres nothing I can do about it!

the next thing I know, everyone I was dealing with..including teachers ignored me. never returned my phone calls, emails..nothing!..then was handed a $5000 bill for only 4 classes!

my question is..

is what they did legal? Can i fight this?

I'd suggest you cal the Oregon State Bar's Lawyer Referral program, and ask to be referred to someone knowledgable in School Law. One lawyer I know in SE Portland has handled some cases like yours - his name is Neil Jackson. I'd give him a call first. Tell him I sent you. Good luck to you!
