Legal Question in Consumer Law in Oregon
Can someone legally come to your house and take back a puppy that they gave you?
1 Answer from Attorneys
They can come and ask for it back, and you can refuse. What can they do? They can sue you, claiming that you were not entitled to keep the puppy--that the puppy was just on loan to you or something. Or maybe you were just supposed to feed it for a while but not keep it. How are they going to prove that, unless you signed some sort of statement or contract. Did you? If not, it will be difficult for them to get the court to order you to give back the dog.
Or they can call the police and say you stole the puppy. Did you steal it? Do you have any witnesses as to how you acquired the puppy? This probably will not happen, and it will in any event be your word against theirs.
