Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Oregon

Right to verification of a debt

I'm being sued by a finance company who claims I have not paid off my debt. I have documentation from them that says I have (signed car title, copy of contract marked 'paid', etc) but 1 year after our business was concluded, they still contend I owe them more money. I requested proof, but they did not send me anything that resembled a payment history (with dates, account balance, etc). Don't I have a right to verification of a debt? I'm preparing for a hearing, and I could not find the legal statute that says I am entitled to have proof.

Thank you. By the way, this is a *really good* web site.

Re: Right to verification of a debt

You have a right to verification of a debt. Your entitlement is set forth in the Federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. Please e-mail me directly should you wish to discuss this matter further.
