Legal Question in Criminal Law in Oregon

hypothetical criminal law questions for screenwriter

I'm starting work on a screenplay for an independent film I hope to shoot within the next year, and there's a lot of research-type questions I need to have answered. The story deals with a small-town Sheriff in an eastern Oregon town who, at various points in the movie...

1) tracks a serial killer in concert with FBI agents, 2) is sentenced to prison on a second-degree murder charge, and 3) is released from prison on parole

Like most Americans, for better or worse, most of what I know about law, crime and punishment comes from watching movies. I want to make sure that my script's treatment of these issues is realistic, and hopefully revealing of information that hasn't been seen a hundred times before.

To this end, I have a list of questions--most very open-ended--that I would like to get answered and elaborated on.
