Legal Question in Family Law in Oregon
Adopting step-children
I'd like to adopt my step-kids. I am married to their mother, she has my last name, and the kids actually came to us to request if this could be done. The birth father is in jail for murder. (he stole the kids, ran off with another woman, wife got kids back, he had kid with other gal and later killed her - his parents raising that child) He is not involved and none of them have any desire to visit him, though they know it's an option if they need it. My deterant is that I have an indecent exposure conviction on my record. I was caught masturbating (in my car not trying to be seen) and that case was going to be dropped. Just prior I was locked out of a worksite where I did janatorial work early one morning and needed to urinate. I made the poor choice to do so in an alley behind the building and a woman saw me, called the police, and claimed I was masturbating. I am on probation for one more year (total of two) with no jail time and am completing sex offender treatment per the court. We have not notified the birth father of the children's request. We live in Oregon. What are the chances the court would accept my adoption request with a tainted criminal record?

Re: Adopting step-children
If the choice is between a convicted murderer and a convicted masturbator, I'd opt for the masturbator rather than the murderer.
As a general rule, masturbation does not result in death. In contrast, murder does.
