Legal Question in Family Law in Oregon

A business associate of mine has custody of his two year old daughter which was ordered through an Oregon court. His wife is mentally ill suffering with schizoaffective disorder and it was because of this my associate was given his child and was ordered by the judge to divorce his wife.

It is my associate does not want a divorce as he hopes that someday his wife will again be able to function at a level where they can again be together without the worry of her going into crisis. It is his belief that marriage is for life.

My question is under what circumstances can a judge give orders to a couple forcing them to divorce?

Don't be ridiculous. Under NO circumtances can a judge EVER "give order to a couple forcing them to divorce." That's total nonsense.
