Legal Question in Family Law in Oregon
collecting back support for now adult children
After divorce, I was given custody of children and he was ordered to pay child support for 2 children, amount $100 month, (about 18 years ago). He paid very little of it. The children are now adults. Is there any way to collect the arrears from him now? He stands to inherit a sizable amount of money and I think I am entitled to back payment of child support plus interest. Am I right and how can I get started?

Re: collecting back support for now adult children
You CAN collect for past due child support. However, there may be jurisdictional issues which you will need to discuss with an attorney. You can proceed through the Family Support Division for a nominal fee. They are very busy and it may take up to 6 months or more for them to get started. If there aren't any jurisdictional problems, you can proceed through a private attorney who will charge you a retainer to handle the matter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
