My daughter turned 18 on October 25 20111. It is my opinion, that she is now considered a legal adult. We live in the state of Oregon. Is she a legal adult?

ANSWER:

Yes, At age 18, she is a "legal adult." At least for most purposes.

HOWEVER, Oregon has a special law, ORS 107.108, applicable only to divorced and never-married parents, that allows the government compel parents to financially contribute to the support of an unmarried adult child between ages 18 and 21 who qualifies as a "child attending school" as defined in the statute.

Also, although otherwise a legal adult,Oregon law considers a person under age 21 as still being a "minor" for purposes of the alcohol purchase and possession laws.
