Legal Question in Family Law in Oregon

I am expecting to have a child. The father wants no part in our child's life. He is worried that if I ever go on welfare or any sort of state assistance, he will be "hunted" down by the government for his financial responsibilities. I am wondering if someone in my family, like my mother or brother can take over financial responsibility in his place.

YES, this can be done. The legal procedure is called ADOPTION, by which an existing father is legally replace by another person who then becomes the child's "other parent." So your mother or your brother, by adopting the child, would then be come the child's other parent.

Of course, it may get complicated. If your mother adopts your child, you and your child will have the same parent, and you will then become your child's sister (you and your child both having a common parent. If your brother adopts your child, your child will then be your niece or nephew (i.e., your brothers child). It could be very interesting, as well as legally confusing.
