Legal Question in Family Law in Oregon

wants full custody

The child's father and I werer never married. We have had problems with custody in the past but agreed to verbally share custody. The agreement was the child to be with me four days and then his father four days. We also agreed to no child support at the time since our son would share time with us equally. The plan has worked for the last two years. However, our child will be turning 5 soon and starting school and I am going to college. His father cooperating with my new schedule at all. I think it is time to get legal papers saying who gets full custody. Do I actually need a lawyer to prepare documents for me or can I do them myself? I am low income also.

Re: wants full custody

In my opinion this matter is too complicated and too important for you and your children and too financially risky to take on yourself. You should have a lawyer evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your factual and legal position before you and outline a strategy for you before you do anything. That includes not telling your former spouse that you're talking to a lawyer. Many lawyers will accept reasonable payment arrangements to cover their fees.
