Re: giving up your parental rights in oregon/washington

It depends on what you mean by giving up her rights. You can agree to a very limited parenting plan and, if you are not collecting government support, waive any right to child support. If you later obtained state benefits for your child, the state would ask Mom to contribute. Also, if she later changes her mind, she has not given up her parental rights and could ask for parenting time --you could ask for support at that time. BUT - If you have a new partner who wishes to adopt your son, your ex could sign her rights over to a new "mom" or "dad". But Oregon does not allow you to cancel her parental rights unless there is another person who would agree to be responsible if something happened later. Absent criminal issues. This is complicated so see your attorney.
