If by separation you mean a General Judgment of Separation issued by the court, then pretty much the same laws apply as in a dissolution (divorce). A judgment of separation will maintain a valid marriage legally intact but will allow the parties to live apart, and may divide the parties' property, determine who owes debts, establish a parenting plan for the two children, order child support and determine spousal support, if requested.
