Legal Question in Family Law in Oregon

Spousal Support

In 1995 I was awarded temporary spousal support. My ex-husband made four payments and I never heard from him again. Recently, I found out where he resides. How can I go about collecting on the amount owned?

Thanks from Oregon

Re: Spousal Support

Uncertain as to what you mean when you say "temporary" spousal support.

Are you referring to an award of spousal support made while the divorce case was pending? Temporary spousal support of that nature is generally only good for the time that the divorce is pending and comes to a stop when the divorce is finalized.

Perhaps you are referring to an award of "limited duration" spousal support contained in your divorce judgment, which sets an amount but limits the number of payments to be made.

In any event, to collect unpaid spousal support, your best bet is to hire a lawyer. That's what lawyers are trained to do.

(For me to atempt to explain all of the complexities involved in enforcing and collecting a judgment for the payment of money is somewhat akin to my doctor trying to explain to me all of intricacies of appendix removal surgury, so that I can do it myself. When I asked my doctor to tell me how to do it, she told me that I should begin by going to medical school. After thinking about it, I concluded that she was right. So I just hired her to do the job and let it go at that.)
