If a young unmarried couple sign the papers for the birth certificate on their child, and put the child's last name as hyphen with the mothers name first and father's last, by law is his last name legally the mothers or fathers?

ANSWER:
The child's name is considered as a single unit, notwithstanding the hyphen. So, for example, if the child's last name is Smith-Jones, the child's last name for alphabatizing purposes will be deemed as beginning with the letter "S."
And Olivia Newton-John's last name begins with the "N."
