Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Oregon
An author has written an autobiography containing a chapter about my family-using our names and the place we live. In this chapter the author has completely caricaturized my family, attibuted foul language and behaviour to us and generally denigrated us. Is there any recourse under us law

If the author has identified you by name, including last name, then you have described a classic case of libel. You can sue someone for libel (false statements that defame you and harm you) in civil court. If the author has changed the last name, you can still sue for libel if you prove that others in your community still recognize the "fictional" characters as your family.
