Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Oregon

liability for pet injuring neighbor's pet.

Our dog escaped our fenced yard and injured our neighbor's cat. The vet bill so far is $2000.00. Can we set a limit or are we responsible for the whole vet bill no matter how long or how big it gets?

Re: liability for pet injuring neighbor's pet.

You are likely responsible for the damages caused by your dog. You do not have a right to set a limit on the vet bills incurred by the neighbor's cat. Although you cannot set a limit, the bills must be reasonably related to the damages caused by the dog (for example you are not responsible to pay to neuter the cat, even if it is done during surgery to repair injuries caused by the dog).
