Wrongful Termination?

My husband was in a car accident 7/2/07 in which he broke his rib. He was told last week by his employer that he could not return to work until he saw the doctor and got an okay. His appointment is this coming Friday, 8/3/07. He was told today that he was fired because he hasn't been in contact with them. Is this legal?
